Social media gaffes have claimed an unprecedented of candidates’ heads in the Canadian election this year. Conservatives and Liberals alike have fallen foul of comments they posted on social media long before they ever had any political aspirations.
Tim Dutaud is the latest person to lose their candidacy for the Canadian Conservative Party, it emerged he had posted videos of himself making prank phone calls on YouTube.
In one he pretended to have a mental disability. In another he pretended to have an orgasm, according to The Chronical Herald.
Dutand is far from the only person to be caught out by old social media posts, however.
Giles Guibord, another Tory candidate, was forced to resign after allegations that he made sexist comments in a newspaper’s online comments section.
The offending comments claim that “In Quebec, it’s the descendents of the French who have ancestral rights [to land], not the Mohawks. The Supreme Court still does not understand that.” Other posts were also claimed to be sexist, where he claims that women are weaker than men, and therefore under their protection.
Ala Buzreba, a Liberal candidate in Alberta, was also forced to resign over four year old abusive tweets. The tweets encouraged one individual to “blow their brains out” and told another that they should have been aborted.
Finally, VirJiny Provost, a young Bloc Quibecois candidate was left somewhat red faced when her answers to an online survey surfaced online. Asked what she’d need in the event of a nuclear apocalypse, Provost wrote she’d require a phone, chips and a penis.
